The Integrated Treatment of Immune Deficiencies & Allergies with Herbs & Essential Oils

Immune-deficiency and immune-hyperactive conditions account for a large and growing portion of today's health concerns and include chronic infections, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and so on, and allergic disorders such as hayfever, asthma, eczema, food allergies, etc. To achieve truly effective results today, these should be evaluated and treated using an integrated, systemic and multi-layered approach. Treatment modalities will include Western and Chinese herbs, nutrition, essential oils and specialized supplements with various actions, such as adaptogenic, pituitary-regulating, immunostimulant, adrenocortical stimulant, thyroid-trophic, antiviral, NK-cell stimulant, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, etc.

We will systemically analyze and differentiate immune disorders according to their underlying preclinical organ/gland syndromes as well as Chinese medicine energetics. This root-level treatment will include hyper- and hypo-adrenal syndrome (in three stages), hypo-thyroid syndrome, intestinal dysbiosis, toxicosis (four types), nutritional deficiencies, etc.

Special topics covered in this information-packed seminar will include the hidden role of female hormonal balance in allergic and autoimmune disorders; environmental and metabolic toxins as immune disruptors; emotional imbalance and unproductive stress as cytokine disruptors, antioxidant therapy to combat free radical-induced damage to immunity, etc.

I loved Peter's class on immune dysfunction. The wealth of scientific information he provided clearly explained Western medical conditions that I had never understood, and I now feel much more confident in my ability to recognize and address these conditions. I have begun implementing my newfound knowledge with patients and with my family, and I look forward to integrating the teachings over the next weeks and months.
Jenny Wood, L.Ac., C.H., Cape Cod, MA

Dr. Holmes' seminar on immune dysfunctions is invaluable if you are seeing chronic, complex cases such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, cancer, allergies, etc. Although much of what he discusses isn't learned in standard Chinese Medicine, the information is relevant to probably 90% of my patients. It is the missing link to being able to more readily diagnose and successfully treat these modern disease processes. Dr. Holmes offers a wealth of information and clinical expertise through an integrative blend of classical Chinese Medicine and functional medicine. We are lucky to have him raise the bar of our medicine, and our patients in turn are lucky to benefit.

Using Essential Oils in Chinese Medicine

Genuine essential oils bring a powerful new dimension to a complementary medicine practice. They are proving invaluable in complex or stubborn conditions, where they can create amazing shifts in treatment outcome. Like acupoints and reflex zones, essential oils are electromagnetic by nature and are governed by the laws of qi flow. By deeply modulating neuroendocrine or jing shen functions through neuropeptide activation, they can trigger profound changes in the individual, as seen by immediate pulse changes. They have shown empirically to enhance both the physiological and psychological actions of points and reflex zones without any additional burden to the digestive system. The use of essential oils represents a perfect complement to acupuncture and bodywork in general that is safe, user-friendly and extremely effective.

This seminar will present the essential practical information needed to start incorporating oils in the clinic. It is appropriate for acupuncturists, shiatsu therapists, massage therapists and other practitioners wishing to incorporate essential oils in their clinical practice.

I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing class this past weekend. It was phenomenal. I learned a lot on so many levels. I am grateful and humbled and thankful to you for giving the information with such passion, intelligence and patience ... Essential oils hold the wisdom and spirit of the whole plant. Using the oils unlocks some area of the brain in a sort of lock and key effect that is otherwise unreachable, dissolving the barrier that exists for healing to occur.
                Elizabeth Fine, L.Ac

The use of essential oils in Chinese medicine answers the questions and confusion many practitioners face when wanting to choose herbal therapies. Namely, what to do when our patient doesn't fit into a zang fu pattern? What to do when patients don't want to cook herbs or use pills? In these cases, essential oils provide a pleasant, safe and effective alternative and primary choice for patients and practitioners alike.

April 10 & 11, 2010

Detoxification as a Treatment Strategy

Toxicosis, or the pathogenic accumulation of toxins, acts as an invisible yet potent stressor to body-mind balance both physically and energetically. It has become a major component of today's most challenging disease conditions, including immunodeficient viral conditions, chronic inflammatory conditions such as fibromyalgia, allergies of all types, chronic infections and autoimmune disorders. Although the concept of detoxification or cleansing has a long history in the West, it currently needs reevaluation to target the specific and potentially life-threatening types of toxins seen today. These divide into exogenous and endogenous types, and include chemicals, heavy metals, microbes and metabolic toxins.

In this completely revised seminar, we will divide each type of toxicosis into specific preclinical disease conditions and differentiate them according to organ syndromes and Chinese medicine energetics. Finally, for each condition we will explore the many treatment methods available, which boil down to transformation and/or elimination of the particular toxins. This will include the clinical use of botanical remedies, medicinal foods, essential oils, as well as more specialized supplements and procedures.

Peter has taken the topic of cleansing out of the toilet and has succeeded in turning the issues of detoxification into a practical, sophisticated and truly comprehensive discussion. This seminar is information packed: it would take me years of research and thousands of dollars in trial and error to compile this high-quality information. The Resources and References page alone is invaluable.
                Amy Herrera, L.Ac.

Since my graduation 12 years ago, it has been a struggle to find CEU classes that offer new and exciting information. Peter's Detoxification seminar was therefore an excellent find. Peter is a wealth of information for prevention as well as treatment, and his expertise is greatly appreciated. I've been using his treatment principles in my practice and seeing tremendous results. A big 'thank you' from me and my patients!

Using Essential Oils in Chinese Medicine

Genuine essential oils bring a powerful new dimension to a complementary medicine practice. They are proving invaluable in complex or sticky conditions, where they can create amazing shifts in treatment outcome. In this seminar we will see how oils can enhance both the physiological and psychological actions of points and reflex zones, without causing an additional burden to the digestive system. The use of essential oils represents a perfect complement to acupuncture, acupressure and other forms of bodywork that is user-friendly, safe and extremely effective.

A hands-on treatment practicum will be included on the second day to practice the selection and application of oils to points, as well as to monitor improvements in the pulse, complexion and symptoms. In addition, we will work up case histories throughout both days.

YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT
First day
* The four different ways of using essential oils in a clinical practice
* Clinical definitions of oil quality: genuine, authentic, integral

I always come away from Peter's seminars with lots of specific information that I can start using with my patients right away. His wealth of clinical experience is drawn from many years of practice and research, and is presented in such an organized way that it's easy to follow, and he's able to transmit a great deal of information in just two days.
